A few well-planned sabotages could therefore today quickly knock out all of society's critically important services, especially during the cold of winter.

The solution would be for each community to build up a complementary, small-scale emergency source of electricity and heat, which would be based upon locally available fuel such as wood, peat, etc. Curve 4

(Since these type of fuels have low energy output, they would only suffice for emergency supplies. They could never replace more than 20%-30% of the present, peace-time energy sources, which are based upon energy-dense fuels such as uranium, oil, coal, gas and hydroelectric power.)
